If you felt busier than usual this autumn, it was not your imagination. The State Bank’s latest numbers are out, and the quarter from July to September 2026 was the strongest start to a fiscal year Pakistan’s tech sector has ever had: $1.246 billion in IT and telecom exports, up 17.7% on the same three months last year.

And here is the part that matters to this community: a big slice of that money was earned by people working exactly like most of us — from a desk at home, for clients who have never set foot in Pakistan.

September was the month

The quarter got stronger as it went on. August brought in $394 million. September brought in $435 million — 10% more than August, 18% more than September last year, and just $2 million short of the all-time monthly record set in December 2025.

Freelancers did even better. Pakistani freelancers earned $197 million in September alone — the highest monthly total on record, and 49% more than the same month a year earlier. Put the full last fiscal year next to it: freelancers brought home $1.76 billion in FY2025-26. A few years ago, freelancing was treated as a side hustle in the official numbers. It is now one of the main engines of the sector.

Zoom out once more and IT is carrying the services economy: those $1.246 billion were about 46% of everything Pakistan earned from services exports in the quarter, out of $2.719 billion in total.

Why should a developer in Lahore or Karachi care?

Fair question. National totals can feel abstract. Three reasons these numbers are worth your attention:

  • Demand is real. Foreign companies are spending more on Pakistani developers, designers and SEOs every quarter. If you have been wondering whether to raise your rates or finally learn that second skill — the market is answering you.
  • The work is spreading. Growth like this does not come from a handful of big software houses alone. Marketplace payouts, small agencies and solo freelancers are a quarter of the total now, which means opportunity is reaching people outside the big firms.
  • Your receipts are the proof. Every dollar that arrives through a bank counts in these figures — and counts for you personally, too, when you file taxes, apply for a loan, or show a client a track record. Money that moves through informal channels builds neither the country’s numbers nor yours.

The honest caveat

One strong quarter is a pace, not a promise. Monthly figures jump around, and the reports themselves note we cannot yet see which cities or which kinds of work grew fastest. Internet reliability, payment friction and foreign demand will decide whether the rest of FY27 keeps this up. But direction matters, and right now the direction is clearly, measurably up.

Bottom line

$1.246 billion in a quarter. A near-record $435 million month. $197 million earned by freelancers in thirty days. If you are building skills in WordPress, frontend, design or SEO from Pakistan, you are not betting on a fringe idea — you are part of the fastest-growing export sector in the country. Keep your invoices clean, bring your money home through the bank, and keep sharpening the skills the world is clearly willing to pay for.
